The mountaineering world controlled by men - 2 comments - Why does some organisations dont change when obviously the world around them change all the time. In U.K. the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) are ruled by a group of elderly men, the lack of womens is total. The reality among us that climbs and performs mountaineering is that more than ever we see young and elderly women that are among us climbers. Decisions and attitudes in the BMC influence things that we care about in the U.K. In the European Union equality between women and men is one of the fundamental principles of Community law. UIAA (International mountaineering and climbing federation) that rules not only Europe regarding things that happens and attitudes in the world of climbing have not adopted the thoughts of EU; In the executive Board of UIAA, among the seven members you will find one woman, and as usual in the mens world, she has to be something extra, and Paola Giglioti has not only a degree as doctor but also as a professor of Physiology of Mountain Sports. The management committee isnt any exception, the committee that should (among other things) make recommendations to the General Assembly on the long-term strategies of the UIAA. Also in this committee, women is an exception. At coronn.com we are happy to meet women and men by the crags in Europe, people that together share the interest of climbing and mountaineering. It is no doubt that through changes in the community now women can take time off for activities in freedom, and quite often we see as many women as men by the crag. No belay monkeys women that climbs and have fun. The question is; how many decades will it take before organisations with elderly men will become a reflection of its surroundings? *(headline at index page) "Fat cats" is Denny's well chosen words for elderly men in conservative organisations. |
